Bad feature class alias when geoprocessing polygons

I use ArcGIS Pro 2.9.3 and frequently run into an issue where the alias name field for a polygon feature class is populated with the old feature class name when geoprocessing. When viewed in Catalog, the feature class name looks fine. When added to a Map, however, the layer in the table of contents displays the alias. This is, to say the least, very confusing. I can end up with several apparent copies of the same feature class in my project when actually they are each distinct, just with identical names in the TOC.

I can think no situation in which it would be correct to use an old feature class name as an alias. Certainly it has no place in my workflow.

Is there some way to turn this "feature" off?

Thank you for considering.
