Changing the Field Order of a Feature Layer

What's the most efficient way to change the field order of a feature service (or feature layer)?

Is it possible to do this in ArcGIS Online without having to republish a new instance of it with the revised ordering?

Without a straightforward way to reorder the fields directly within the feature layer's settings, the desired field order and pop-up appearance must be maintained in web maps which can become repetitive and time-consuming for feature services that are reused in multiple web maps.

If you configure and save the pop-up/attribute field order through the Visualization tab of the feature layer's Item Details page, that setting will maintained for any map that layer is added to.
