Search widget highlight result

I'm working on an EB app where the user can either search for an address using the ESRI geocoder, or search for a parcel using the parcel number from a layer in the map. The address portion is working fine.  But for the parcel, I want the search widget to return a result and zoom to the selection and highlight the polygon.

Currently, I have the zoom working, but I cannot get it to highlight. I have been able to filter it down so that it only shows the parcel that was searched, however, that is not what I want. I would prefer all parcels still visible with a selection around the parcel that was searched. It seems like this should be very simple, and I'm sure I am missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm currently on 11.2.

FYI this can be achieved using query as well.

EDIT: Turns out it had something to do with the layer I was trying to run the search and query on. Once I republished the service it worked.

Thank you for this, it was insightful into how the search widget is designed to only display what has been searched on. 

After following the directions in the link I was surprised that it still didn't highlight what I searched on. At least all the features were still displaying. 

I will test the query now to see if that's a good route to go.
