Reversing the members visibility on groups with API?

I'd like to know if anyone has been about to work out how to reverse the setting on portal groups that hides members.

The documentation says this is irreversible, but this causes major issues when trying to change user roles and change group ownership:

Is there someone that can be done with the python api?

Otherwise the only workaround is to delete the group and make a new one from scratch. In which case, we could use the python api to recreate and repopulate the groups automatically.
