MakeFeatureLayer causes feature class to "not exist"

I am writing a Python script which uses MakeFeatureLayer_management. I was having some problems which I narrowed down to the following behavior:

So essentially I make a feature layer out of a line feature class in a file geodatabase, and then the feature class ceases to "exist". It still shows up in the table of contents and I can interact with its attribute table just fine, but it won't respond to any Python calls. The feature layer, however, does exist. Can anyone explain what might be happening here?

Thanks!
