marking duplicate records in attribute table

I have 1800 points in an attribute table for a point layer. I have the X and Y values and concatenated them into an XY field so that I know which points are duplicates (same XY value). I want to mark duplicate points with the same XY value - example, I created a duplicate field and the first two records are the same so they both have a value of 1, the next two records are the same so they both have a value of 2, etc... I've attached a picture of the attribute table to better explain what I'm trying to do. I've entered all the values in the DUP (Duplicate) field manually. Which is fine for a few points but I have 1800. Is there a way to so this with a script in the field calculator? I'm using 9.3.

Thanks in advance!
