How to deactivate automatic metadata update?

Hello --

I am using network analyst to calculate routes between 150 000 pairs of points, which are stored in two shapefiles.
I have a performance problem (of course!) : processing time at the beginning is roughly 1 sec but it gradually increases to reach ~25sec after 150000 iterations (see jpg).
I think I have identified the main bottle-neck: automatic metadata update of the two shapefiles, as ArcGIS logs every operation I do on them (e.g. SelectByAttributes). After 150000 iterations, the metadata xml file had grown up to more than 11Mb. Deleting the xml file saw a drop of the processing time back to around 1 sec per iteration.

My question: is there a way to deactivate automatic metadata update?

Thanks !
