Consistent geoprocessing errors after installation of 64-bit background geoprocessing

Hi all,

I haven't been able to turn up other posts on the forums describing a similar problem, so thought I'd take a shot in the dark.

I'm running ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 SP1 on Windows 7 64-bit and I recently installed the 64-bit background geoprocessing tool.

Since that time, gp tools executing in the background of ArcMap or in standalone python scripts (executed against the 64-bit python.exe) fail with rather generic errors. Most recently I'm getting an "ERROR 000582: Error occurred during execution" while trying to run a very simple call to ExtractPackage. If I instead run the call with the 32-bit python executable, the script executes without complaint. I get similar behavior when trying to execute other mundane 64-bit gp tasks.

This leads me to believe that there's a problem with my 64-bit installation of python, or with ArcGIS, or both.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the 64-bit update, with no success.

Any ideas as to how I can troubleshoot further?
