Are these apps really responsive ?

Hello,

We are hunting for the right app to use so are looking through all the examples stemming from ESRI's Apps page. http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/

The little symbols next to the Shortlist style and the Playlist style indicate that these apps are responsive.

However, when looking at the examples on a small device, it appears that they are not responsive.

Should these little symbols be removed at all to avoid confusion ?  We demonstrated one of the apps to staff today and they got all excited when I told them it will work on mobile phones.  Now we need to go back and get them to select a different one. (probably a map tour)

Regards

Georgie

Yes, both the shortlist and playlist apps are fully responsive and will work on smartphones. We added responsive design to the playlist in December and just finalized the beta shortlist responsive design a few days ago. Because both of these app have been recently updated, some of the older examples do not include the responsive designs. You can see the examples below of recent example to get an idea of how these apps will perform on smartphones:

Ah I must have been demonstrating to our staff an old shortlist and playlist example that did not have responsive design built in.

Thanks.

I did notice a difference between the two apps you listed. If I resize the desktop browser to a much smaller size, the Shortlist will be responsive and change appearance to fit the smaller screen size. However, the Playlist does not do that. If I look at the Playlist on my smartphone, it does show the different layout.

Yes, you are correct. The shortlist responds just to screen resolution whereas we put a few extra conditions to the responsive design for the playlist. Because the playlist already has a way to minimize the side panel, we chose to keep the same basic layout for all desktop views as most users will not see a smartphone size screen on their desktop monitor unless the app gets embedded in a smaller webpage. If the app is embedded, the app will automatically remove the banner to provide more space. Additionally, the playlist checks to see if the app is on a touch device (tablets and smartphones) before adjusting to a smaller gesture-friendly UI.

Hi all

We've now released the update to the Shortlist that features its new responsive design. Sorry we were a bit delayed compared to the apps list on the website. The link to the download on the Shortlist page: http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/shortlist will now give you the updated Shortlist. To try it out the new responsive design, click the San Diego Shortlist screenshot on the page above or launch it here: http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/shortlist-sandiego/
