These popped up as services. What are they?ArcGIS SOMP, and ArcGIS SOCP
Yep.You may also see processes named ArcSOMP.exe and ArcSOCP.exe running on your machine. Despite their familiar-looking names, these processes are not part of ArcGIS Server. They are created and used by ArcGIS Desktop to allow geoprocessing tools to run in the background while you perform other tasks.Weird thing is I was trying to log in to sde, so not sure why these would pop up. But will read. Thank you.
Too bad they are such memory hogs! I have 2 ArcMap documents open and Catalog open, and their are 6 ArcSOCP.exes' running! Using a total of 552108 mb of ram! What gives? I'm not even background processing right now.
The background processes act almost like another ArcMap session. If you have executed a tool with Background enabled from each one of your session, you could almost consider having 4 ArcMap's open on your machine at once. If you have Background enabled and you do something with GP, they should start up. If you don't actually execute a tool their memory footprint should remain small.By using Geoprocessing > Options > "uncheck" Enable Background Processing and it will shut down the running processes.I'm a little unsure why you have 6 SOCPs if you only have 3 sessions. You should only have 1 SOMP and 1 SOCP per ArcMap session. (The doc quoted above in this thread was accurate at time of post, however we made changes since the Beta to Final release for both product and doc)....unless you mean 3 SOMPs and 3 SOCPs?
