Unable to import this shapefile. (Generate Features exception 'null')

Hello,

We are seeing this error when users (who belong to the User role) try to upload shapefiles from the Map interface in Portal (10.2.1).

Unable to import this shapefile. (Generate Features exception 'null')

If the user has the Publisher or Administrator roles then they do not get this message - ie its not related to the shapefile but rather the role.

Any ideas why this would be happening?
