Can't build iPhone Apps?

Hi

I am trying to write an iPhone app for a university project. It is for a public body and the app will be free. I have never done iPhone application development before. The ArcGIS iOS API seems ideal for my needs (a simple trail mapping and waypoint guide for a park), but, having installed the SDK, nothing will compile, even an empty template or the examples. I get the following error on build:

"Base SDK missing"
"!error: There is no SDK with the name or path 'iphoneos3.1.2'

I have iPhone SDK 4 installed on my Mac....

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong, I've only ever done Visual Studio development & the learning curve for xCode/Cocoa/Objective-C/Interface Builder(?!!??!!??) has been steeper than climbing the North Face of the Eiger! Apple apps may be simple to use, but their development environment seems like a pig!

Thanks
