Okay to turn off Elastic Load Balancing for only one instance?

We're new to using Amazon cloud services and have created (and are successfully using) one server instance. We used ESRI's Cloud Builder to create the instance and did not enable the auto-scaling option. On our account summary though, we're paying a decent chunk for Elastic Load Balancing. As far as I understand, the balancing is only needed for more than one instance. So, why did the Cloud Builder enable load balancing, and am I safe in stopping it?

Thanks,

Eric
