Are certain types of rasters larger than others?

This may be a simple question that I should already know, but do raster file types have general sizes associated with them? For example, if you had 1 gb of raster data, and you wanted to run copy raster, would the output file type make a difference in terms of size? Is .tif inherently bigger than, say, .grd? Something I've been wondering about for a couple days.
