Removing gaps in buffered streams

I have a need to buffer streams to different widths for non-point source pollution analysis.  No problem with the buffering but in confluence areas and segments where the stream meanders the buffering leaves gaps and holes as the polygons fold back on themselves.  I can remove some of these by dissolving while buffering but I need to retain most of the attributes so in most cases dissolving does not help.  I know I can manually remove the holes by editing but there are way too many to make that approach practical.  Any ideas for how to remove these in one operation?  It seems like an easy task but I am not coming up with a workable solution.
Thanks, John
