Failed to connect to database

have Arc 9.3 installed. In ArcCatalog, I have right clicked in a folder and set up a new file database. When I then trty to rename this I get an error message saying 'Failed to connect to database', and can't use the new database at all. It shows in my folder, with the default file name, but I can't add to it, re-name it, move it or delete it.

This support page (http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/26800) suggests this is because of a geodatabase created in an old/newer version of Arc - but I seem to have the same issue as the person giving the page a 1 star review - I've created the document in my version ofd ArcCatalog, and it has tripped itself and worn't recognise it.

Can someone advise on why this is happening?
