how to get parameter as number not string

Discussion created by maplex on Aug 22, 2013

This should be easy for someone to answer - i am writing a python script but I can't use the / on my parameters because they aret a text string I think. I have tried int(ringNumbers) but that dosn't work - a section of code shown below

#Buffer Distance
bufferDistance = arcpy.GetParameter(2)
#amount of rings
ringNumbers = arcpy.GetParameter(3)

totalDistance = bufferDistance*100

increments = totalDistance/ringNumbers

The last line is causing an error - error type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: unsupported operand type(s) for /: 'unicode' and 'unicode'
