Is there a way to fill the color of a selected attribute?

I was given a script that is being used to select the different counties of the state from a shapefile, zoom to them, and then export a gif of the view to a folder. This works perfectly by just changing the color of what the selected feature to the color I need since it needs to be hollow to see the information inside the selected feature.

What I need to do next is have a view that is from the entire state view and run the script so that it just selects the county, colors the entire county red, and then finishes the script, exporting a gif of the selected feature.

I am very new to Python and programming in general and like I said, I was given the script by my supervisor while she is away in hopes that I could get it to work properly.

So my question is, is there something that can be written in that when the field is selected it is filled red and not selected around the boundary of the feature?

If it helps, I am currently using 10.0

Thank you for any help, it is greatly appreciated!
