Hi,

I am playing around with ArcGIS Online. One thing I don't understand is how "my content" is related to building a map in ArcGIS Online. I have been reading the help but still cannot find any concrete answers to my confusion.

Here's what I know:

1. When I am creating a map using ArcGIS Online, I can add data to my map by selecting Add button > Add Layer from File. I am then limited to adding a file in the form of .zip file, CVS, or .TXT with 1,000 or < records.

2. I can add a wider range of data to my content, such as .lyr, kml, or even map packages.

What I don't understand is how how those two interfaces relate with one another. For example, I've added several .lyr files to my content but I cannot see that data when I am editing my map. Do I need to share it somehow to make it available to myself?

My initial impression of ArcGIS Online is that the various components are not well fused together.

Thanks,
Lyndy
