Copying data to server when publishing a geoprocessing service?

When I publish a geoprocessing service, why does the service editor insist on copying my data to the server when I have the data registered to an enterprise geodatabase? Is there a way to avoid copying the data?

Could you provide more information?
-model or script
-type of database (sql, oracle, etc)
-are you replicating databases, or is the client and server database the same?
-referenced as layers or featureclasses
-it says it'll copy, but if you press publish, does it actually copy anything? (there was a bug some data types may show as being copied, but dont actually get copied)
