placeholder for  basicviewer

I downloaded the basicviewer from ArcGIS Online so that we could customize it a bit, though I'm having trouble setting the placeholder for the geocoder.  Here's what I have so far:

    var geocoder = new esri.dijit.Geocoder({
        map: map,
        geocoders: geocoder,
        placeholder: "Address Search",  ***this does not work
        //value: "Address Search",  ***this kinda works
        theme: "simpleGeocoder",
        arcgisGeocoder: geocodeOptions
    }, "webmap-toolbar-right");

When I use something like value: "Address Search", it shows up in the geocode input, but why does placeholder: "Address Search" not work?  Perhaps I missed something simple?  I'd prefer to use placeholder, but if I have to use value, can anyone recommend a simple method for hiding "Address Search" on mouse down or key down (similar to how placeholder is supposed to function)?

Any help would be appreciated,
