I have labelled the comments of a point layer and I can't figure out how to put the comments away from the point and add an arrow without converting the labels to annotations. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

This might help a little bit (not sure how much).
Go into the label properties of the layer, and click on Symbol... which will bring up the dialog to edit the symbol further.
From there you can click the "Edit Symbol..." button. This brings up a more advanced dialog with which you can do all sorts of label properties.
Select the "Advanced Text" tab, check the "Text Background" box, and go into the properties.
From there you can add callouts (Ballon, Line, etc...).
Line is what you'll likely want to select. Play around with those options and hopefully you'll find what you're looking for.
