Overwrite Map Service Does Not Seem to Work Properly

especially when attempting to overwrite map service. Initial Map Services publish just fine. However the overwrite locks up or hangs ArcMap and then, after forcing a close of ArcMap and re-start of the service in ArcCatalog/Manager, the update apparently has taken place. Has anyone else experienced this? Yes, I have examined the logs and about the only thing I can find is:

"......failed to rename cache folder..."
