Unable to "add layer from file"

I am trying to add a layer from my files to a map in ArcGIS without any luck at all. I am not sure where the error is taking place and would appreciate any help that I am able to receive here. I am sure that it is operator error at this point but not sure where the process went wrong.

Any tips or tricks?

What kind of file are you trying to add? If it's a shapefile, it must be zipped up to include all files that comprise the shapefile.
