Origins of modeling historical traffic data

Two Questions:

1. I was wondering if anyone might know the origin or genesis of the how ESRI Network Analyst models historical traffic data? I was especially interested in the process of how the multipliers found in the 'DailyProfiles' table were derived. Are there any scholarly articles, textbooks or other references as to how the 'DailyProfiles' and the 'Streets_DailyProfiles' tables were created and used? I am doing some route analysis using historical traffic data for my thesis and would like more understanding of the concepts surrounding modeling historical traffic data using profiles, multipliers, etc.

2. I was also wondering if there is a systematic way of choosing a profile to represent my street data than how it is explained in ArcGIS Help 10.1 under ???Historical Traffic???. I was not sure if the choosing process was based solely on a visual comparison by looking at a graph or profile of my historical traffic data for a particular street segment and comparing or matching it to a profile from the 'DailyProfiles' table? I did it by visually comparing and choosing the profile that best matched but thought there may be a more precise or scientific way of doing this?

I hope these made since. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
