Could you tell me how distances are computed in the Geostatistical Analyst? Are Euclidean or spherical distances computed? Spherical distances would seem essential for small scale maps such as a contour map of the entire world.
Unless you use barriers, all distances are currently calculated with Euclidean distance. As you noted, this means that interpolating around the world is a bad idea.
