Associate model Field parameter with a feature class parameter

It seems so simple -- You have a model parameter for a feature class and a model parameter to select a field in that feature class.

When the user selects a feature class in the model dialog box, the feld parameter's drpdown is supposed to be flled in with a list of fields.

I've seen two relevant Help articles that nevertheles don't provide an explicit answer to this:

"Understanding validation in script tools" says that part of internal validation is "If the parameter is a Field data type, check that the field exists in the associated table."  Yet I don't see a way to associate the field with the table.
Field Filter implies it happens automatically; I assume from the example it would be if the field parameter follows the table/feature class parameter.

Yet in the model dialog box, the field parameter's dropdown has nothing in it.  If I type the field name in, the model will run correctly.

I guess I'm missing something simple here.
