Hello I am trying to add a zipped kmz file to a map in arcgis online.  I add the zipped file via the "add layer from file" option and I get an error that says my file is not a shapefile so it can't be added.  Is there a different way that I should be doing this?  THanks to anyone that can provide insight.

The KML has to be web accessible via a URL. Use the Add layer from web option. There are some limitations on what features in a KML ArcGIS Online supports. Review this help topic for more information.

I'm having a similar problem with a KML that has polylines. I added the KML to My Content, but when I try to add it to a map in the ArcGIS.com viewer it says it cannot be added or is unavailable. However, I can add the KML to a map in ArcGIS Online Explorer. I don't understand why one would work but not the other.

Jamen,

I'm not seeing the problem. If I go to this item:

http://arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=09c9f12698124d60ae85fed12a84effd

and click Open, I can see the KML in the ArcGIS.com map viewer...

Mike,

Interesting... Previously the kml was not shared, but I changed it so that it is now shared. Does a layer have to be shared to be seen in the map viewer?

Thanks,
Jamen

Yes, the KML item has to be shared as well. You'll be able to view it when you're signed in, but nobody else would be able to.
