Where can I find an "ArcGIS Server Web Service" URL to load into my map?

What is a layer from the web that I can load via these options:
- ArcGIS Server Web Service
- OGC Web Service (WMS)

It wants "...ArcGIS/rest/Services/..." in the URL but any links like that that I have found via google are not accepted in the ArcGIS dialog box.

I get unhelpful error messages like this: "The layer, ESRI_LandBase_WebMercator, cannot be added to the map."

I'm just trying to find ANY layer from the web that I can load via those options; I don't care what it is as long as it works. I have done CSV and KML fine, but don't know what I'm looking for for the others.

Thanks.

The first is a URL to ArcGIS Server. The second is a URL to a WMS service. Both of these are used when you know the explicit URL to a particular service.

ArcGIS has a fairly standard URL syntax. Here's an example:

http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Topo_Map/MapServer

WMS URLs can vary. Search ArcGIS.com for "type:WMS" and you'll find some.

thanks,
