When making a map in ArcGIS Online, I'd sometimes like to use one of the ESRI basemaps without its labels reference layer (e.g., Terrain, but without the labels). Is that possible?

Add the service directly from the REST endpoint using Add > Add from the web and check the option to use as a basemap:
Most of the basemaps in the Basemap drop down have the actual basemap, as well as a reference layer, (the labels), on top of it. Use this
to find the actual basemaps to add to a webmap as a basemap.
