We had much success with High-Logic Font Creator (
). Their forums are very helpful and they are responsive to trouble shooting problems.
Not sure what types of fonts you are planning to make. Two summers ago we had a highschool intern use Font Creator to create a bunch of fonts/ symbols for our GIS including MUTCD pavement markings and signs. The intern found the program quick to learn and quick to use. They were even able to take picture files (like JPEG's) of signs and such and easily import them into Font Creator and cleam them up a bit to make a font out of them (including taking pictures of signs in the field and digitizing them).
I'll admit that our intern happened to be above average, before he left I had him make a "How to Guide" for using Font Creator. I attached the guide to this post, let me know if you find it to be of use.
Before going with Font Creator we also looked at CorelDRAW (
) but we found that it was way too complex for quickly making the simple fonts we were looking for.
If you would, post back and let the Forums know what software you use and how successfull you are in your endeavors.
