Tool to determine dependant relationship between two distributions?

Discussion created by dmede on Nov 7, 2012
I'm looking for advice on tools or work flows appropriate to analyzing the influence of or connection between, two or more spatial distributions.

For example, I have a patron with a data set of species distributions taken from the field on a regular grid. For each sample location one or more of up to 9 species of insect may be present at varying numbers of individuals. The general visual pattern shows that where one species is present certain others are usually absent.

What tools in arc can be sued to look at the two (or more) distribution patters and determine if there is a relation ship between them? Or if it's just random coincidence?

I know this is probably a low level analysis question but most of my experience in helping GIS patrons is with overlay analysis so I'm not as familiar here as I should be.
