Search Window Missing!

I've been on the phone with ESRI technical support for the past two hours to no avail.  Version 10.1 was unstable and had to be reinstalled, but now I can't bring up the search window in ArcMap or ArcCatalog.  I can bring up the table of contents window and the catalog window just fine, but the search window does not come up.  its very important because we use it during teaching.  It's a fast way to find the commands we need.

Technical Support tried uninstalling and reinstalling twice, changing registry settings, and even running a small bug fix called SearchFix which fixes some registry settings.  All to avail. 

Could it be something with a template like the .mxt master template? 

ESRI support suggested that the next step be to totally reimage the machine, but that would take a long time. 

Has anyone else run in to this issue? Help please before I have to spend days re imaging the machine and reinstalling software.
