Scripting Linear Referencing

I'm having all kinds of trouble trying script a linear referencing process I would like to automate to save me some time. The process I'm trying to atuomate is pretty simple in ArcMap, load your table with the Route and distance data, right click on it, select Display Route Events, input the parameters, have the points show up in ArcMap as an event layer, then right click the event layer, select Data > Export Data, save it as a shapefile, then continue on. What I tried to do was use MakeRouteEventLayer in Python, then CopyFeatures to make it permanent. When I do that, the shapefile I end up with has  all the attribute information, but there are no points in the map window. I tried selecting a point, and then clicking the Zoom to Selected button, but nothing happened. It's almost as if it's saving the data in the shapefile's attribute table, but not keeping the geometry.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm about ready to throw my computer out the window.
