User not found to add to private group

I'm trying to add/invite users to my private group. They have registered but when I search for them, their names do not show up. Once a person registers with ArcGIS online can they be immediately searched or is there a lag time? I'm using IE9. Are there other steps that need to be taken or could there be another issue?

The user needs to set their profile to public, otherwise it can't be found.

I think there must be at least one more variable as to why a user cannot be seen. I can show you a case where two users have both their profiles set to 'organization' visibility (Who can see your profile?). One can be found, the other cannot.

You might want to check if the role of the user permits them to join groups.
