Calculate Surface of a Watersheed in relation with DEM

Hi,

I've tried to calculate the surface of a watershed using this method http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Polygon_Volume/00q90000003q000000/

And i have some error

Runtime error <class 'arcgisscripting.ExecuteError'>: ERROR 000732: Input Surface: Dataset D:\...\gdem does not exist or is not supported 


The dem is there but is not recognized.
What should be the cause?
There are any other method to calculate the surface of a polygon in relation with DEM.
