Map Archiving

I wanted to know what the best practices are to archive an ArcMap project without suffering the pain of broken links and/or lost databases when opened at a later time. For example, people work on their local hard drive, but only copy a portion of the project data to the network drive once they're finished. Is there a way to transfer everything so that, once it's moved, the project actually works when somebody wants to access it a year later, i.e. some archiving procedure, zip/ unzip etc?
