why does the Histogram tool create a table

When I run the histogram tool in spatial analyst and double click to get to the graph properties, the layer/table pulldown shows a table in the form his#### where #### changes (sequentially, I think) each time I run the tool.  Does anyone know where this table is located?  It is not in the default geodatabase and it's not in the "map" table of contents.  I only see it in the pulldown.

Since the histogram is using this table and not the layer, you can't "select" sections of the graph to display on the map without changing to that layer in the graph properties (which then requires additional changes in the properties dialogue box before you get back to a histogram similar to the original).
