DDP - Is it possible to set properties using Python?

Hi, I'm working on building a script tool that will create a map book and I'm wondering if it's possible to set the properties of DDP with Python? For example, it would be great to complete the DDP Setup, as is done on the DDP toolbar, in Python. This would involve setting the index layer and setting the fields to use for name, sort, map extent etc. I read in the link below that in 10.1 there would be a new index layer property, but does that mean we can set it, or just obtain it? I'd also like to be able to set the fields as well. Is this something I need to suggest?

Thank you!
