Table rowcount with BLOB field

I have a problem in ArcObjects where getting a rowcount (ITable.Rowcount(IQueryFilter)) of a table which has a BLOB (Binary Large Object) field takes ages.

I have a table with no BLOB field and about 12,000 rows and a rowcount takes 0.3 seconds. Another table with 240 rows and a BLOB field takes 6-7 seconds. Both rowcounts have a QueryFilter. (Note that rowcounts where the QueryFilter is 'Nothing' all take about the same time because ESRI stores the total rowcount in another table.)

I have tried a manual rowcount by opening a cursor and just cycling through the rows. This takes about the same time as the ITable.RowCount.

The SubField of the QueryFilter is set to the OBJECTID field (hoping to speed it up by ignoring the BLOB) but this doesn't change the time taken.

Does anyone know a workaround for this problem?
