Selecting points based on minimum distance

Discussion created by aviwings on Oct 14, 2011
Hi everyone,

I am not sure if I'm in the right place, but I was hoping someone could offer some advice (I'm new to ArcGIS and having trouble). So I have data for 500 individual trumpeter swans. For each of these swans I have multiple locations where the birds were spotted. Each time the bird is seen it, the location is marked on the map with a point (even if they are seen several times at the same site). Some of these birds are migratory and some are not. I want to find out which ones are migratory. So I want to select only birds that have a minimum distance of 15 km between any two sightings for that individual. That way, if a bird is sedentary, it will not be selected, and if there is any evidence of movement, it will be selected. I have no idea what kind of spatial tool I should be using and I am hoping that someone could help steer me in the right direction!

Thank you very much for your help!
