ambiguous error message

Greetings, 

I am batch processing a large amount of raster GRID images using Python v2.5.1.  Receiving the 'error in executing grid expression' message is not uncommon but  I have yet to see this one:

ERROR 010067: Error in executing grid expression. NO FREE CHANNELS
Failed to execute (RasterToPolygon).

Does anybody know what the 'NO FREE CHANNELS' message is about?  I'm using ArcMap v9.3 on Windows 7.

This may be a red herring, but here is an old thread talking about the error but for an older version of ArcView.
