Is an Envelope ALWAYS a rectangle?

The ITopologicalOperator4.QueryClipped method has the following signature...

Public Sub QueryClipped (
    ByVal clipperEnvelope As IEnvelope,
    ByVal clippedGeometry As IGeometry )

I have a polygon that I want to use to clip another polygon where they intersect, and obviously I want the clipping envelope to be the actual shape of the polygon, not a rectangle.  Otherwise, how would you ever be able to carve one polygon shape from another?

Well EVERY article I have ever read in ArcObjects library reference only refers to an Envelope as being a rectangle.

So if it really is a rectangle, then how do I clip one polygon shape from another using the actual shapes of the polygons?

Thanks a lot.
