Is it possible to crate a detailed large-scale drainage model from LiDAR DEM?

I've always had problems when trying to create detailed drainage (and catchment) models from high resolution LiDAR DEM. Is it even possible? It seems I can only use LiDAR for such analysis when I either generalize the data or create an integer raster.  I've never been able to create say drainage network from floating point LiDAR because all the flow accumulation segments are to disconnected or orphaned. The only way to overcome this is to create the drainage model from an integer raster but that is too inaccurate and over-generalized for detialed analysis and often still disconnected.

The problem is most prominent in flat areas especially uneven flat areas.

I believe it has something to do with the Flow Accumulation algorithm
