SHP File Not Saving Edits and Additions

I am getting a weird bug that I am curious to see if anyone else is receiving.  If I create a new feature class, and digitize a few polygons, and I go to save the edits and stop editing, the polygons appear as normal.  I edit the file again, and no problems.  I then save the document as a normal MXD.

Then, I go to open the MXD where my work has been saved, and some, if not all the polygons are gone.  Attribute information may be missing as well.

Has this happened to anyone.  Typically, I just save the shapefiles and feature classes I create into a folder rather than a geodatabase.  Would saving the shp files into a geodatabase be better practice and less buggy?

I am currently running Windows 7 64 bit with ArcGIS Desktop 10.0, with all of the patches and service packs.
