Is there a way to change the color of a Widget when in use?

I was wondering if you had for example 'Filter ........' selected and you click off the widget pop-up, instead of the widget remaining the same picture/colour could it change to a another color to signal to the user that the selected filter is still in use.

   there are many variables to this question. The answer depends on:

1. What theme?
2. Where is the filter widget placed?
3. Is the widget still active or is another widget receiving the focus?
4. What part of the widgets color do you want to change? The widgets header? The widget icon placeholder?..
