AO: How to determine the file format of a feature class (shapefile, GDB, CAD, etc.)

This should be easy... but it's not!

Starting from an open table (column header context menu) in ArcMap, I need to be able to programmatically determine what type of table the user is working on: shapefile, CAD, standalone DBF, GDB (what kind).

I looked at this a month ago so I forgot the details but at the time I could only find a function that was dependent on the human language of ArcMap, for ex. if ArcMap was installed in French, it would potentially return a different string for "shapefile" than with an English version. I need a human-language independent method.

I use VB.NET 2010 & ArcGIS 10.
