Balanced cut/fill

Is there a way in ArcGIS to calculate a a surface from a DEM that will produce a balanced cut/fill (i.e, cut volumes equal fill volumes)?

Following up on this older thread, did you receive any insight on how to accomplish a balanced cut/fill workflow.  I have a student interested in this workflow.  Please advise.
