Serious Application Error

I'm running (or trying to run) ArcMap 10.6.1 in Windows 10 on a Dell Precision 7920.  For the last two years, through various upgrades, everything has generally worked.

I had not used the software for a couple of weeks, but I needed to today and got a "ArcGIS for Desktop has encountered a serious application error and is unable to continue" message when I tried to load it.  The Splash Screen (do they still call them that?) says "Initializing License", then "Initializing Application", then "Loading Document", then the error message.

I'm not a computer guy.  I don't want to be one.  I just want the stuff to work.  I have made no changes/upgrades since the last time I used it successfully.  Is there a relatively simple solution to this problem?
