Is it possible to change the color of a layer during an animation?

I believe the only way to show a layer varying colors by attribute it to preset it, and this is very tedious because I have to create a copy of the layer. Once I create the copy I can alter the colors to show the difference between the two in the animation. Is there any way to change the color of a layer based on an attribute value during an animation?

I am not sure this will be helpful but you might be able to change the symbology based on time if you add time to the layer.
